Cross-Rigid Side Wall Belts Overview

Fluent Conveyors Corrugated Sidewall Belts are built with fabric or tension plies with mono-filament, fiberglass or steel breaker cross rigid plies. Corrugated side walls and cleats are hot vulcanized to the belt creating the strongest cleat and sidewall connections. Fluent also offers replaceable urethane cleat blades allowing them to maintain full carrying capacity for the life of the belt. Sidewall Belts increase splice service factor with our high strength low stretch cross rigid plies and reduce sidewall cracking using a special fiber loaded compound.

Things to consider when researching this type of belt for your application include abrasiveness, moisture, chemicals, temperature, pulley diameter, incline and decline angles, material sizes, weight of the material, tonnages and belt speed.

Key advantages include flexible configurations, steep inclines, lower capital for high lift systems. Disadvantages are lower capacity, large pulleys required and material carry-back issues.

Core applications and industries that use this belt type include but are not limited to metal manufacturing, cement plants, mining, recycling, tunneling, coal fire plants, waste to energy and more.

Waste Water Treatment Plants

Waste Water facilities around the world utilize our belts to keep their services running (typically moving sludge). The high levels of potential chemical breakdown demand a SBR/Nitrile blend. Not only in the base bell but it's also smart to match that oil resistant (MOR) compound in the corrugated sidewall.

This also provides excellent base belt and sidewall adhesions during the vulcanization process. It's also important to “Chem-glazing” the edges of belts going into waste water treatment facilities. By sealing the edges, the plies stay protected from wicking and absorbing those abusive chemicals.

Multiple Mechanical & Vulcanized Splice Options

Fluent Conveyors offers many different splices to fit your needs and specifications.  We offer stainless steel mechanical splices such as alligator splicing, rivet plate, rivet hinge, bolt plate and bolt hinge splicing.  These splices are completed with butted flush mount sidewall splice kits to keep your belt sealed. Fluent Conveyors also offers our belts with vulcanized splices including the side walls.  We offer longitudinal vulcanized splice, diagonal vulcanized splice, hidden splice, finger vulcanized splice,  step vulcanization and more.

We also offer a super screw splicing. This simple high tensile splice allows to remove complex installs no matter the frame configuration, weather conditions, ease of access etc. This process is designed for both self-drilling and tapping which allows for belt fiber separation without cutting the belting. Key benefits include reduction in downtime, ability use belt scrapers, repair torn belting and 6 options to match tensile and belt carcass. 

DURABLE CLEAT OPTIONS

Fluent Conveyors offers both hot vulcanized (hot-molded to the belt has a patented process that greatly reduces the possibility of cleat separation during usage) and replaceable cleats with a hot vulcanized base.  These durable cleats and bases are designed to handle high loads and steep inclines while giving you the maximum belt life available.

Whether your corrugated belt is moving heavy bulk materials uphill, downhill or at a steep incline, our belt division wants to make sure you get the correct side wall height and cleat options to ensure your investment is protected.

Side Wall Belt Profiles & Technical Details

Belt Profile Industry Configurations

    1) Sidewalls that are mounted flush on the side of the base belt without cleats (smooth top). Typically used on horizontal conveyor configurations or minimal angles (no curve up or nose overs). 

    2) The sidewalls mounted flush the the sides but with cleats between the sidewalls. This allows for moving materials at steep straight inclines (no curve up or nose overs). 

    3) The most common and widely adapted configuration is having the sidewalls slightly recessed from the belt edge to allow for inclines (with curve ups and nose overs). 

**Please note there should be a minimum for recess of the side (10% of the overall base belt width plus the side wall height)

Belt Width

The conveyor belt width should typically be 4 times great than the side wall height to remove the risk of "top-heavy" loading. 

Face Width or Effective Belt Width

The effective width, or the lateral distance between the sidewalls, is recommended to be at least two times the largest lump size to prevent possible product bridging or entrapment.

Cleat Spacing

The center to center dimension of the pusher or cleat is recommended to be minimum of 2x the largest piece of material. This will remove the ability to have material bridge or get stuck. Its important to make sure the cleats match the inside wall of the corrugated area of the belt. This will help remove the risk of material getting stuck between the cleat and the side wall. 

Cleat Height

It's important to keep your cleat height at a minimum of a 1/2" lower than the side wall height to remove the risk for jamming or interference around external chutes on the frame of the conveyor. 

This also removes the risk of a cleat continually hitting the return idlers and eventually damaging the cleats on belts 24” wide or less.

Make sure the cleat height is a minimum height of 75% of the largest material height. For instance if the max height of your material is 4" the minimum cleat is 3". If the incline angle of the conveyor is at or exceeding 75 degrees, the cleats must have a minimum height of 150% of the largest item height in your material stream 

CROSS-RIGID BELTING

Cross-rigid or cross-stabilized belting design is a very complex and precise process that gives lateral form, stiffness and rigidity to the belt. This allows for side-to-side support and still allows for linear flexibility to easily conform to incline and nose over angles.

This belting is required to ensure the life span of the belt when moving through the angles (incline or decline). This rigidity allows the belt to easily travel the belt path without complex bowing or sagging that would occur with non cross-rigid belts. 

Cross rigid utilizes two plies, with the strength yarns running perpendicular to the conveyor belt, one in the top cover and one in the bottom cover. If belt specifications require tension demands of 150 or 220 pounds per inch of width, the cross rigid plies can be polyester mono-filament. If the specs of the tension demands are high (330, 440, and 550 pounds per inch of width), the cross rigid plies should be fiberglass.

          The cleats are also available in Black Standard, Black Oil Resistant, Black High Heat Resistant, Black Flame Retardant (FR), Black High Oil Resistant, and White Oil and Fat Resistant (FDA) compounds.

          Straight “I” cleats: “I” cleats are generally used on inclines up to 40 degrees. Standard heights through 5” are a one-piece rubber hot-molded construction. Those 5-1/2” and taller are an unequaled two-piece design with a “U” shaped hot-molded rubber foot into which a replaceable urethane cleat blade is bolted.

          Scoop “C” cleats: "C" cleats are available in heights from 1/2” through 5”. “C” cleats are used when additional capacity is required in steep angle applications up to and including 90 degrees. All “C” cleats are a one-piece rubber hot-molded construction.

          Combination “S” cleats: "S" cleats are available in heights from 4 1/2” through 15-1/4”. “S” cleats are specified for higher capacity applications at angles usually greater than 40 degrees. A one-piece rubber hot-molded construction is available for heights through 5-1/2” (140mm), and the two-piece design with a “U” shaped rubber hot-molded foot into which an angled cleat blade is bolted is utilized for heights 5-1/2”and taller.
