Pulley material influences pricing. Basic steel pulleys are the cheapest, while stainless steel and aluminum pulleys last longer. Some pulleys feature a metal core and a ceramic, polyurethane, or plastic coat for enhanced traction, abrasion resistance, and sanitation.
The most common conveyor pulley materials include:
Steel: popular due to their strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness, steel pulleys accommodate numerous applications and budgets. They are used in light to medium applications such as cardboard recycling and component manufacturing.
Stainless steel: with exceptional corrosion resistance, stainless steel pulleys thrive in severe, moisture-rich, or chemically hostile environments, such as coal mines and chemical plants. Their long service life compensates for a higher initial investment.
Aluminum: lightweight yet sturdy, aluminum pulleys are cheaper than steel and stainless steel. They also provide corrosion resistance and reduce system vibration.
Polyurethane: applied over steel or aluminum cores, polyurethane coatings provide excellent traction and abrasion resistance. Polyurethane coatings increase pulley costs but prolong service life and minimize maintenance abrasion-rich environments.
Plastics: high-density polyethylene and nylon pulleys are corrosion resistant, lightweight, and low friction. Plastic pulleys are generally cheaper than steel pulleys. Food processing, manufacturing, and waste management industries use them in wet, corrosive, or hygienic environments.
Ceramic: these pulleys feature a ceramic wear surface over a metal core for exceptional abrasion resistance and heat resistance. Their price is comparable to stainless steel.

Spiral wing pulleys have a unique spiral vane design that cleans the belt and prevents material buildup. These pulleys function as conveyor tail pulleys and drive pulleys in applications where large amounts of wet or sticky materials accumulate on the belt and pulley, such as the food processing, organic waste, and energy industries.
