About Phoenix Contact

Hugo Knümann opened Phoenix Contact in Essen, Germany, on May 5, 1923, selling overhead contact line hardware to the tram operators of the Ruhr. A few years later, he worked with engineers at the utility RWE on a problem in power station wiring, and in 1928 the two produced the first modular terminal block mounted on DIN rail. Air raids destroyed the Essen offices in 1943 and pushed the company to Blomberg, where its headquarters have remained. Josef Eisert took over in 1953 and turned a trading house into a manufacturer. Phoenix Contact is still owned and run by the founding families, employs more than 20,000 people, opened its first US subsidiary in 1981, and operates through more than 100 subsidiaries worldwide.

What Phoenix Contact is known for

Phoenix Contact built its name on the terminal block and expanded outward into nearly everything else inside an industrial enclosure.
