Shaft diameter, load requirements, operating speed, frame type, and environmental conditions determine which take-up bearing will work best. To select an appropriate take-up unit, follow these steps:


Take-up bearings help maintain belt tension throughout conveyor operation. As belts stretch during break-in or wear over time, take-up assemblies allow adjustment to restore correct tension without disassembling the conveyor.
Proper tension prevents belt slippage at drive pulleys, reduces excessive sag between idlers, and minimizes material spillage. Take-up bearings also accommodate minor belt tracking corrections by allowing small adjustments to shaft position and angle.
Unlike standard pillow block bearings, take-up units mount in slotted frames that permit linear movement. This adjustability allows maintenance personnel to compensate for thermal expansion, belt elongation, and normal wear without removing the bearing from service.

Non-expansion units maintain precise shaft location at one end. The outer housing is fully constrained in the frame slot. All thermal growth occurs away from this fixed point.

These units allow the shaft to slide axially within the bearing inner ring while the outer housing remains stationary.

Place the fixed bearing at the drive end and the expansion bearing at the tail end. For shafts under 4 feet, two fixed bearings are typically acceptable.
