Magnetic head drum pulleys remove ferrous metal contamination from material streams. The permanent magnet circuit attracts and holds ferrous material to the belt face, separating it from non-magnetic material at the discharge point.
This self-cleaning magnetic separation protects downstream crushers, shredders, and processing equipment from damage and improves material purity in recycling, waste management, and other material recovery operations.

Steel cord belts, wire mesh belts, and belts with significant metal content reduce magnetic field effectiveness and are not recommended for magnetic pulley applications.

Axial interpole circuits arrange magnetic poles along the pulley axis in alternating north-south patterns. This configuration provides greater magnetic field depth, making axial circuits effective for thicker material burdens and applications requiring deeper magnetic penetration. Axial interpole design represents the most common magnetic circuit configuration for head drum pulleys.


Ceramic ferrite magnets provide reliable permanent magnetic force for general tramp iron removal, including nuts, bolts, nails, wire, steel cans, and similar ferrous contamination. This cost-effective magnetic material handles operating temperatures up to 250°F and represents the standard specification for most magnetic head pulley applications. Ceramic magnets require no electrical power and minimal maintenance.
Rare earth neodymium-iron-boron magnets possess higher magnetic energy than ceramic magnets. This increased field strength captures weakly magnetic materials, fine ferrous particles, and ferrous metal with inclusions such as wood, rubber, or non-ferrous attachments. Specify rare earth magnets when maximum ferrous removal is required or when material characteristics require high-intensity magnetic separation. Rare earth magnets cost more than ceramic but provide superior separation performance.
Burden depth: The depth (thickness) of material on the belt as it passes over the pulley. Deeper burdens require stronger magnetic circuits or axial interpole configurations for effective ferrous capture. Measure burden depth at the head pulley, as this determines the magnetic field penetration required.
