About SKF

SKF was founded as Svenska Kullagerfabriken in Gothenburg, Sweden, on February 16, 1907. It began when engineer Sven Wingqvist patented a multi-row self-aligning ball bearing to stop the repeated failures on the drive shafts of a local textile mill. The bearing tolerated the shaft misalignment that damaged machinery of the period, and demand crossed borders almost immediately. Within three years, the company had 325 employees and a subsidiary in the United Kingdom, with manufacturing in Europe and North America soon after. SKF founded Volvo as a subsidiary in 1926 and later added sealing and centralized lubrication businesses through acquisition. It remains headquartered in Gothenburg with operations across roughly 130 countries.
