Worn lagging reduces the coefficient of friction between the pulley and belt. If your drive pulley slips under load, inspect lagging for smooth wear, torn grooves, or rubber separation from the shell. New lagging restores traction without requiring a new pulley assembly.
Ceramic lagging provides approximately twice the friction coefficient of standard rubber compounds for extreme traction requirements in applications like steep incline conveyors or drives with marginal belt wrap.
Worn bushings create play between the shaft and hub, allowing movement that causes noise and vibration during operation. Inspect bushings for wear patterns, scoring, or looseness.
Profile disc hub designs (Class Three and above) distribute stress more efficiently and extend bushing service life in demanding applications like aggregate conveyors, recycling sort stations, and heavy material handling operations.
Repeated bearing failures indicate shaft deflection or misalignment. Standard shafting material (AISI 1045) suits most applications, but high-stress positions (drive extensions, long bearing centers, or high-horsepower drives) require upgraded materials like 4140 or 4340.
Field-replaceable lagging systems (EZ Lag, Craft-Lag for drum pulleys, Fas Lag for wing pulleys) allow lagging replacement without removing the pulley from the conveyor frame. They reduce downtime in applications where pulley removal requires extensive disassembly or where space is limited, such as enclosed conveyor galleries, tight equipment layouts, or installations where overhead clearance limits pulley extraction.

SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber): General-purpose applications with good abrasion resistance. Most cost-effective option for standard conveyors in moderate conditions. Suitable for dry to slightly damp environments and non-abrasive materials.
Neoprene: Oil resistance, outdoor exposure, and temperature extremes. MSHA-approved options available for underground mining applications. Handles chemical exposure and weather better than SBR. Common in agricultural conveyors, grain handling, and mining operations.
Urethane: Maximum abrasion resistance with durometer 80–90. Longest service life in high-wear applications. Cold temperature resistance makes urethane suitable for outdoor installations and refrigerated facilities. Less water absorption than rubber compounds.
Static conductive neoprene: Prevents static buildup in explosive environments or when handling flammable materials. Required for grain elevators, flour mills, and other applications where explosive dust creates safety concerns.
Ceramic: Ceramic tiles molded into rubber compound. Provides approximately twice the friction coefficient of standard rubber with exceptional abrasion resistance. Handles extreme traction requirements and severely abrasive materials.
Smooth: Dry applications with adequate traction. Minimal belt wear. Common on snub pulleys, bend pulleys, and non-drive positions.
Chevron: Wet conditions with directional water channeling. V-pattern points in the rotation direction. Provides good traction while shedding water and debris.
Herringbone: Similar to chevron with aggressive water shedding and debris removal. Points do not meet in the center, creating continuous grooves that channel material away from the belt contact area.
Diamond: Reversing conveyors requiring symmetrical traction in both directions. Can be installed in either orientation for simplified spare pulley inventory.
Circumferential: Non-drive pulleys in very wet applications or cold temperatures. Allows lagging to deflect and prevent material buildup. Grooves run perpendicular to belt travel.
Standard specifications: Durometer 45, 60, thickness 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1"
Hot vulcanized lagging provides maximum adhesion between the rubber and pulley shell for the longest service life. The lagging is applied to the pulley and cured under heat and pressure, creating a molecular bond with the steel surface.
Cold bond lagging uses adhesives to attach pre-cured rubber to the pulley shell, suitable for field repair and certain replacement contexts. Field-replaceable systems (PPI EZ Lag, Craft-Lag) allow replacement without pulley removal where access is limited.
Taper lock design with fast installation and removal capability. Most common specification for maintenance operations where frequent pulley changeout is anticipated. The split bushing design uses cap screws to draw the bushing halves together, creating friction grip on the shaft. Suitable for standard duty applications with proper torque capacity for the shaft diameter.
Stock shafting in common sizes typically ships within 1–3 days. Custom configurations require additional lead time based on machining requirements.
