A 1-ply conveyor belt (also known as a mono-ply or single-ply belt) is made of a single fabric sheet (ply). These light-duty belts are typically coated in rubber or PVC to protect the carcass.
Due to their thin construction, 1-ply belts are highly flexible. They can also be surprisingly durable and impact-resistant when given a thick outer coat, resulting in a capable yet economical belt.
1-ply belts can be coated in food-grade finishes and specialty compounds for abrasion, fire, oil, chemical, and heat resistance. They can also be equipped or integrally molded with cleats for improved material handling.
While 2-ply belts are more common, 1-ply belts provide an economical solution to light-duty applications. The food, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical industries commonly use 1-ply belts attached to slider bed conveyors for gentle, precision conveyance.
Most 1-ply belts are 2–4mm thick. Belt thickness depends on the manufacturer, carcass composition, and cover thickness. 1-ply belts with slim carcasses and covers can be as thin as 0.7mm, while steel-reenforced carcasses with thick covers can exceed 10mm.
