conveyor operation.
Trough idler conveyor belts run across a series of angled carrying idlers that bend the belt into a troughed profile, keeping loose, granular, and bulk materials centered on the carry side. The troughed shape increases load capacity per belt width, contains spillage, and cuts fugitive dust on long conveyance runs. Compared with a flat idler belt of the same width, a troughed belt moves substantially more material at the same speed.

Trough idler belts are built from rubber, PVC, or specialty compounds over a polyester or nylon carcass. Heavy-duty rubber compounds are specified for abrasion resistance, oil resistance, flame retardance, and high-heat service. FDA-compliant nitrile and white PU covers are available for food and sanitary applications. For extreme impact loading (mining, quarry, and scrap), rip-resistant carcasses and thicker covers extend service life between replacements.
Review industrial belts for the full range of compound-based options.

Trough idler belts carry loose, granular, and bulk materials over short transfers and long-distance runs. They are the default specification for heavy, abrasive, or dusty product streams that need containment during transport.
Popular applications
Rock, ore, sand, and gravel
Grain and agricultural bulk
Coal and power-plant fuel handling
Biomass, wood chips, and stover for bio-fuel production
Glass, plastics, and mixed recyclables
Scrap metal and shredded fractions
Abrasive debris and raw construction material
Hot and abrasive bulk from foundry and furnace operations
Common industries
Trough idler belt conveyors integrate with recycling sort stations, crushers, screens, and baler infeeds across most heavy-process facilities.

When replacing a belt, provide the manufacturer documentation to match the existing spec. For a new specification or a retrofit where documentation is unavailable, measure the old belt and work through the following criteria:

For more information, see how to choose the correct conveyor belt and how to select the correct conveyor belt size.
When ordering a replacement trough idler belt, have these measurements ready. If anything's unclear, contact our engineering team, and we'll help work through it.
