Fluent supplies plain cleated belts for Fluent conveyors and general replacement. Cleats run perpendicular to belt travel, dividing the belt into pockets that contain loose material on inclines and meter flow on tumble-back conveyors.
Not all options are available in every combination.

Plain cleated belts have evenly spaced cleats running perpendicular to belt travel. The geometry is the simplest cleated profile: each cleat is a continuous bar across the belt face, and the bars together form rectangular pockets that hold loose material against the belt as it climbs.
Plain cleats trade the directional grip of chevron profiles for a broader application range. They work as effectively running uphill as downhill, they don't bias material flow toward one belt edge, and they're the only cleated profile suitable for tumble-back metering, where material is intentionally allowed to roll back over the cleat tops to regulate downstream feed.

Plain and chevron are the two main cleated belt families. Profile selection depends on what the belt carries, how it discharges, and whether material flow needs to be metered.


Bidirectional grip, tumble-back metering, simplest geometry. Best for general incline conveyance and any application where directional bias is undesirable.
(closed V, open V, multi-chevron, bullhorn, herringbone): directional grip with V-pocket geometry. Each chevron variant is calibrated to a specific capacity, drainage, lateral retention, or discharge cleanliness.
Specify plain cleated when the conveyor runs in both directions, when material flow needs to tumble back over cleat tops for metering, or when a chevron's directional bias would create unwanted carryback or buildup.
Cleat height should scale with incline angle and material size. For general incline conveyance with granular and light-bulk material, 2–3″ cleats are typically sufficient. Steep inclines and large aggregate may call for 4–8″ cleats. Tumble-back applications size the cleat to the metering charge rather than to the incline angle. Taller cleats demand adequate return path clearance and adequate pulley diameter for the ply count. Confirm conveyor return geometry before specifying heights above 3″.

Vulcanized into the belt carcass during manufacturing. With no mechanical joint at the base, this is the best choice for high-load, high-cycle applications, abrasive materials, and anywhere cleat detachment would cause downstream damage or process interruption. Standard for plain cleated belts on tumble-back conveyors and other production-intensity applications.

Bolted or bonded onto the belt after manufacturing. Worn or damaged cleats can be swapped in the field without pulling the belt. Tack-on and mechanically attached styles simplify maintenance for lower-intensity applications and field repairs.

Cleat base cracking on plain cleated belts is usually a symptom of the wrong attachment method for the application, not a belt quality issue.
The right belt compound depends on what the belt contacts and the operating environment.
