The worldwide market for Waste Paper Recycling is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 3.0% over the next five years. It will reach 49,900 million US$ in 2024, from 41,700 million US$ in 2019, according to a new GIR (Global Info Research) study. About 35% of municipal solid waste (before recycling) in the United States by weight is paper and paper products. To this day, only 42.4% of that is recycled.
On a global level, paper production accounts for about 35% of felled trees worldwide,[7] and represents 1.2% of the world's total economic output.[8] Recycling one ton of newsprint saves about 1 ton of wood, while recycling 1 ton of printing or copier paper saves slightly more than 2 tons of wood. Therefore, in our current environmental climate making the choice to recycle paper and invest in mixed paper recycling is more important than ever. At the moment, most corrugated fiberboard boxes have over 25% recycled fibers while some are 100% recycled fiber.
The generation of paper and paperboard has decreased from 87.7 million tons in 2000 to 67 million tons in 2017. This is fantastic for the environment but provides a lower revenue for recyclers.
China’s action to limit imports of recovered paper has disrupted the overall recovered fiber market in the U.S. and other major recovered fiber generating regions.
In the last several years, North American recycling operations have seen overseas markets for fibre products that have historically been reliable become much more difficult to access. Rising global purity standards are either virtually unobtainable using traditional sorting and separation methods, or they are too costly to meet using options such as adding additional manual sorters.
Unfortunately, mixed paper now consistently sells at a negative value or zero (at best) U.S. dollars per ton in most markets, while OCC is trading at the lowest levels seen in a decade.
