Tire recycling has grown at 2.5% annually from 2014-2019 for a substantial total revenue in 2019 of $1.0 billion. Scrap tires are the country’s largest source of scrap rubber and the US generates over 200 million scrap tires every year. The global market for scrap tires management and rubber remediation applications will grow from $7.6 billion in 2017 to nearly $9.5 billion by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5% for the period of 2017-2022. With over 30% of the crumb rubber used in sports fields and playgrounds coming from scrap tires it is projected that there will be continued growth in the industry. Additionally, recycled rubber can be used as an input in the production of many kinds of rubber products. As a result, when the world price of virgin rubber increases, downstream industries are likely to increase their demand for this industry's recycled rubber. That said, the world price of rubber is typically very volatile and is expected to rise in 2019, although volatility poses a consistent threat to the industry. Although the recycled tire industry is growing and it’s important to recycle old tires, they are very challenging to break down. Especially for car tire recycling, materials are designed and built to endure harsh environments and constant abuse that come with life on the road. Tires are a tough source of waste due to their durability, the total volume produced and the composition – including steel cords and ecologically problematic components. Tires must be collected, processed through tire shredders, put in the tire disposal, and then the various materials must be separated to have clean rubber.
