ISO publishes standards; it does not certify companies or equipment. In the United States, ISO standards do not have the force of law on their own. They become binding when a specification, contract, or export requirement calls for them. For equipment entering the European market, Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027, with harmonized ISO standards remaining the practical route to a declaration of conformity.
This is why ANSI and ISO designations often appear together in the same specification. For engineering standards, conformity rests with the manufacturer rather than ISO.
When evaluating a compliance claim, ask what the claim applies to: a company registered by a third party, a component that has been evaluated and marked, equipment built to a standard without an outside audit, or a process that follows a standard's principles. ISO standards fall into three main groups.
An organization-level certificate does not show that a particular industrial conveyor meets an engineering requirement. Likewise, a machine conformance claim does not tell you how the company that built it operates.
On United States projects, domestic standards often govern first. CEMA documents address areas such as capacity, idler classification, and load ratings, while ASME B20.1 covers guarding and stop provisions.
OSHA (rather than a standards organization) is responsible for enforcement, so any conflict between an ISO standard and a domestic requirement should be resolved before fabrication begins.
Some belt requirements also depend on the belt manufacturer rather than Fluent. Fluent manufactures conveyors and supplies replacement belts made by others, so belt properties come from the manufacturer's own testing.
ISO 13849-1 uses four parameters to determine whether a safety function meets its required performance level. These parameters guide how Fluent builds conveyor control systems.
The target performance level must be established before the system is designed. ISO 13849-1 puts determination of PLr on the machine builder's risk assessment, so we set the target for a complete conveyor. For an integrated line, the line-level assessment sets the target, and the programmed control logic is designed to meet it.
ISO 13849-1 and ASME B20.1 address different parts of the same safety problem. B20.1 establishes when a hazard requires guarding, ISO 13849-1 addresses how reliably the control system must respond, and ISO 12100 provides the risk assessment method used to identify the hazard.
For equipment shipped to the European market, harmonized ISO standards are commonly used to demonstrate conformity. Applying EN ISO 13849-1 and EN ISO 12100 supports the essential health and safety requirements behind a declaration.
The required documentation depends on what Fluent supplies. A conveyor with its own controls that can operate once connected to power is machinery and receives a CE mark plus an EU declaration of conformity. A conveyor without controls, or one driven by the line it serves, is partly completed machinery. It receives a declaration of incorporation and assembly instructions but no CE mark. The party assembling the finished line is responsible for marking it. This means the scope of the control panels affects the required paperwork.
Define this at the quote stage: destination country, controls scope, and who will assemble the finished line. Our export shipping terms cover the documentation that travels with the equipment.

ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 apply to organizations. They address how the American manufacturing operation is managed, including process control, coating and waste practices, and shop safety.

An ISO 9001-registered buyer also has supplier-control obligations. Clause 8.4 requires criteria for selecting external providers and records of that evaluation, which is why capital purchases often involve supplier questionnaires. Component suppliers are qualified before their parts reach a machine. Certificates and test data for our replacement parts are available to the end customer on request.

Stage 1 identifies the standards named by the project, the destination market, any required performance level, and the customer's EHS specification. Engineering then works in 3D CAD from material, bulk density, throughput, incline, and operating environment. This allows requirements for a custom conveyor to be addressed before changes become expensive.
Stages 3 and 6 involve requirements that drive the design of the physical machine. Guarding strategy, stop placement, and access zones are established on the drawings. Guards, devices, and safety labeling are installed during assembly.

A conforming conveyor can become a noncompliant installation.
ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 primarily affect the facility owner and employer because their management systems govern the organization's own programs, not the individual equipment inside the facility. Our safety guides cover the employer side of conveyor safety.
Operating a machine outside its rated capacity or with guarding removed falls outside the terms of our warranty coverage.
Where applicable, the documentation package also includes belt test data and panel certification. The roller chain conveyor owner's manual shows the format.
On engineered projects, reporting requirements are defined under quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
